Excessive Sweating or Hyperhidrosis

What is Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating is when you sweat more than you might expect based on the ambient temperature or your activity level or stress. Excessive sweating can disrupt daily activities and cause social anxiety or embarrassment.
Excessive sweating or Hyperhidrosis can affect your entire body or just certain areas, particularly your palms, soles, underarms or face. The type that typically affects the hands and feet causes at least one episode a week, during active hours.

What causes excessive sweating.?

If heavy sweating has no underlying medical cause, it’s called Primary Hyperhidrosis. This type occurs when the nerves responsible for triggering your sweat glands become overactive and call for more perspiration even when it’s not needed. Primary Hyperhidrosis may be at least partially hereditary.
If the sweating can be attributed to an underlying medical condition, it’s called Secondary Hyperhidrosis.
Health Conditions that may cause excessive sweating include:
• Diabetes
• Fever of undetermined cause
• Generalized Anxiety Disorder
• Heat Exhaustion
• Hyperhidrosis
• Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)
• White cell disorder
• Certain medication side effects
• Menopause / Hot flushes
• Gastritis (Inflammation Of The Stomach Lining)
• Obesity
• Stress

How do you diagnosis excessive sweating?

Hyperhidrosis is a clinical condition, and often a history coupled with clinical findings will give us the diagnosis. The most important factor for hyperhidrosis excessive  sweating.
In addition to the impact factor of excessive sweating, hyperhidrosis can also lead to secondary skin problems. This includes skin irritation most often seen under the arms. This maybe secondary to chaffing, or skin irritation secondary to antiperspirant use. Hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet may lead to infections of bacteria and fungus. It can also cause disintegration of the skin, a condition called maceration.
In some cases we may perform blood tests to exclude secondary causes of hyperhidrosis, or perform a starch iodine test to document the extent of underarm sweating.
