Joint Replacement Clinic
Surgical replacement of a joint is also known as arthroplasty. Usually, a damaged joint is replaced with tools made of metal, ceramic or heavy-duty plastic. Hip and knee replacements are common types of arthroplasties. Conditions which require arthroplasty are deterioration of cartilage due to arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.
The doctor recommends surgery when daily activities get affected because of continuous pain. These include pain while walking, sitting and standing and the inability to move freely. Arthroplasty will place an alternative artificial part instead of the damaged sections in the joint.
The procedure of arthroplasty is mostly a daycare procedure that takes a few hours. In this surgery, the surgeon first makes a small incision. The damaged cartilage and bone are removed and replaced with metal, plastic, or ceramic prosthetic implants. This implant looks similar to the natural joint.
