Hernia Treatment

Hernia is a condition where an organ of mass of tissues protrudes out of its cavity due to the weakening of muscles of the cavity. This is caused by constant pressure on the muscles of the body cavity, which leads to the weakening of muscles that in turn leads to a hernia.

Hernia types

  • Inguinal hernia – A portion of the small intestine bulges out from weakened muscles of the pelvis.
  • Femoral hernia – Fatty tissue of the intestine protrudes through the opening on the floor of the abdomen.
  • Umbilical hernia – Fatty tissue pushes through the abdomen near the navel.
  • Hiatal hernia – A part of the stomach pushes up into the chest cavity through an opening in the diaphragm.
  • Obturator hernia – It occurs through the obturator canal and is seen in women with a history of multiple pregnancies.

Symptoms

  • Abnormal swelling or bulge in the groin, scrotum, or abdominal area.
  • Pain at the site of the bulge
  • Pain while lifting weights or doing strenuous tasks
  • Feeling of bowel obstruction
  • Fever, nausea, vomiting

Treatment

There are two approaches to hernia treatment
  • Open hernia surgery – In this approach, a single long incision is made in the area of the hernia, and herniated organs are pushed back. The incision is sutured with or without placing a mesh.
  • Laparoscopic surgery – In this method, several incisions are made through which, herniated organs are pushed back and secured with sutures.
