Tummy Tuck Surgery
Abdominoplasty, which is also known as tummy tuck, is a procedure to remove excess skin from the abdomen. This surgery is usually done as a beauty enhancement and weight reduction procedure that helps to achieve a flat stomach and also tighten the muscles in the abdomen area. This procedure is opted by men and women for weight control, and also by women post-pregnancy who have weight gain or loose skin on the abdomen. A tummy tuck is different from liposuction, as this process is more about skin tightening and removing the stretches. Liposuction may be performed as part of the procedure where excess fat removal is needed. Those who are on a course for major weight reduction are not advised to undergo a tummy tuck, as due to the separation of muscles scarring can be an issue. It is always better to have a stabilized weight when deciding to opt for a tummy tuck surgery.
The Procedure
Abdominoplasty can be performed by the surgeon as a complete or partial procedure. The entire procedure can last up to 4-5 hours. General anesthesia is administered. Post which, a horizontal incision between the pubic hairline and the belly button helps to lift the abdominal skin and repair the muscles. A second incision on the navel is performed for the removal of excess skin. The excess skin is trimmed and the remaining skin is sutured. In partial abdominoplasty, shorter incisions are made by the surgeon. This is opted in cases where only less excess skin is to be removed.
Healing Process
Scarring due to the incisions is a temporary result of the surgery. There may be bleeding in certain cases, for which drain tubes are placed. Medications need to be taken for faster healing and to avoid any infections in the area. Usual pain and swelling can be expected. A compression garment will have to be worn as a safety mechanism. One can get back to normal active life within one to four weeks.
